October Is Fire Prevention Month

Protecting Our Communities: Fire Prevention Month 2026

As we observe Fire Prevention Month and Fire Prevention week October 4th – 10th, the dedicated members of Local Union 669 stand ready to remind our communities about the critical importance of proactive fire protection. Fire safety is not just about having an evacuation plan; it is about building structures that actively defend lives and property from the first spark.
Modern fires burn faster and hotter than ever before. With the prevalence of synthetic materials, engineered wood, and lithium-ion batteries in today's buildings, fires can become deadly in a matter of moments. While smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are important components of safety, automatic fire sprinkler systems are the only technology available that can automatically detect and control a fire before emergency crews can arrive.

How You Can Participate This Month

Fire prevention is a shared responsibility. This month, we encourage property managers, homeowners, and local  officials to take actionable steps toward safety:

1. Inspect Existing Systems: Ensure that existing sprinkler systems undergo their scheduled testing and maintenance by certified professionals.

2. Advocate for Sprinklers: Support local building codes that mandate automatic fire sprinklers.

3. Spread the Word: Educate your family, friends and co-workers about fire escape routes and the fact that sprinklers reduce property damage and save lives.

Involve your family, especially your children, in fire prevention activities.

1. Draw an Escape Map: Have children draw a map of the house showing two ways out of every room and pick an outside meeting place.

2. Practice “Get Low and Go”: Turn crawling under simulated smoke into a fun hallway game.

3. Test the Alarms: Let Kids press the test button on smoke alarms so learn what the alarm sounds like.

4. Be a Safety Inspector: Walk around your home with a fire prevention checklist, spot and fix the hazards together. Scroll down or click here to download and print a list from Safe Kids Worldwide.

This month and every month, Local Union 669 Sprinkler Fitters remain proud to protect our communities from the ground up. When quality workmanship meets life safety, everyone goes home safely.
